what have i received from others?
what have i given to others?
what troubles and inconvenience have i caused to others?

reflecting on these three questions brings a new way of seeing myself. whether applied generally, or to specific people, i.e., my mother, my partner, my friends, a neighbor, etc., it leads me to be more grateful and to see the way we are interrelated with one another.
i sit comfortably, on a cushion or in a chair, for 15 minutes and reflect outward on these questions. if my mind drifts, i come back to one of them.
naikan is an ancient japanese buddhist practice, the complement of zen meditation's inward reflection. it is widely used as a tool by therapists also.
