One of my best friends is a family physician.  She does not know a lot about AA except that she suggests it to her patients whenever they come to her for their drinking problems.

Today she sent me a text asking me if I knew of any "upscale" AA meetings in town.  Seems someone in the upper crust in our town would like to get sober.

I have been  chuckling about this all day!

I can understand wanting a group you feel safe & secure with. Im in a small town & meetings are more limited than where I began my sobriety. They tend to be more cliquish & hypocrytical. I have been shunned by some for not attending meeting as often as they feel I should. Also have felt unable to open up due to lack of annonymity. I have never felt this before in the rooms. I am currently having to rely on these online meetings for advice & support. I even attempted the Womans meeting hoping for a sponsor in my town. However almost walked out when the topic was politics, sexual pref & Facebook. I am not letting this shade my AA faith. I learned from my 1st sponsor that in order for this to work we must take what we need & leave the rest. I still attend meetings but choose to share in more private rooms.

It sounds silly--"upscale meetings".   But is it, really?  If some old guy (or gal) needs an AA meeting with other doctors to get sober--so be it.   Remember we all come in as sick people.  I used to be opposed to all "special" meetings--womens, gay etc.  I have changed my mind now--it's just not something I choose to worry about.  I bet that some of these folks will be less protective of their anonymity when they get a little time.  Maybe not.  It's all good.

We've had a couple issues with medical professionals in our town because it is so small.  One doctor wanted to go to ultra-Anonymity-stressed meetings, and since there were none of those around (how can you guarantee that?), he ended up hanging with a choice few and having private meetings in those people's homes.  A dentist has joined in with the recovery community and although he goes to NA, he seems happy with not being ultra-anonymous.  I can't say, but I do know there's all kinds of meetings for all kinds of folks.  (We also have an undercover-AA meeting for the people who want it "by the book"...even I don't know where that one is).
