I was thinking that after so many years of not using I might be cured. I have seen advertisments for programs that "teach" an alcoholic to drink responsibly and successfully and wonder if these programs work for the "true" alcoholic and if so, would they work for a heroin addict? Is there such a thing as being "cured" from this disease or does it go into remission, always keeping an eye out for the next available bad circumstance to weasle it's way back into one's life?

I believe there is definately no "cure" for us alcoholics just a daily repreive from this disease. I have not had the desire to drink since i did my steps, thank God! and have never been tempted to try to drink normally and dont ever want to as I am certain that it would kill me!

Zoolie if you really want you can go try because we now have a choice again whether to use or not which we didnt have before.
If you do decide to take that chance with your life come back and let us know the results if a couple of years if you live through it!

Those programs that claim to teach an alcoholic to drink have, for the most part, been discredited. Before getting sober I tried countless times to drink normally and I failed. I would have never landed in AA if I had been able to control it. I am not a heroin addict but I am virtually certain that the same would apply. Ask yourself if you have ever tried to do it socially and what the result was. I don't think I would want to take the risk.

Zool, I can’t tell you when it happened to me but I no longer want to drink, responsibly or irresponsibly. Maybe it came when I knew I couldn’t safely drink again. I really don’t know.
Can’t tell about heroin I wasn’t a heroin addict.
