james b if our primary purpose is to stay sober...do we have any secondary or other purposes???

In the AA Preamble it states that our Primay purpose is to Stay Sober. For me that may be the primary purpose for the alcoholic as many see it. My primary Purpose now after a few years has changed.I TRUST MY HP. and Love him and my neighbor and do unto others what i would like to be done unto me -IF I WERE IN THERE SHOES- but by putting the plug in the jug is not all that i see as my primary purpose. is it because i have English as my second language and understand it wrong..tell me what do you… Continue

kismet What does Length of Sobriety Mean?

What does time mean? How much emphasis do you put on a person’s sobriety date? I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, multiple years of sobriety are an accomplishment for any alcoholic. On the other hand not all oldtimers work a strong program. There are also people who relapse after multiple years. Do you automatically respect th

zoolie Our geriatrics

I was in an assisted living facility the other day. I was noticing a few things...

1. The facility has placed "name tags" on the doors of many of the residents. These name tags are "art" that the resident made. It looks like a freakin' kindergarden hallway instead of adult apartments. It is not "cute". IMO it is an insult on the dignity of the residents, whether they have dementia or not. They are adults and should be treated and respected as such...my little soap box I know. I'm

Juliette Chandler why our traditions protect us

i went to a meeting in one of those "other" twelve step programs and i shared. A few minutes later this woman I hadn't seen for years shared, and boy was she on the attack on someone in particular...me. Now, I know sometimes we feel everything is about us, but she truly was attacking me. I believe this was one of the most abusive things we can do. We need always protecty our confidentiality just for situations like this. The person attacked (me) is left the next day going...what

zoolie Finding a life lost

I was talking to a past sponsor of mine recently. She was asking me why I dont go to as many meetings as I used to go to and why I wasnt involved in service any more. I told her that I had reached a point in my recovery where I felt OK not going to as many meetings as I had been going to, 5-6 a week, in the evenings after work, on the weekends at all times of the day, all the activities that the area held, the conventions and the womens get togethers, etc. I suppose I stopped d

kismet Court Ordered AA

Is court ordered AA a good idea or does it violate our principles? I am unsure of this but I do tend to believe that it is short-sighted. If you have ever been in a meeting with a bunch of court-ordered folks not listening, sometimes being resentful of being there you may know what I mean. Let's not forget that not everyone court-ordered is an alcoholic and those that are frequently are not ready to get sober. Both groups can be disruptive. Sometimes I think that we should not be involved in

kismet My HP, My Errand Boy

Ok, this is the last time I will try to post this!

Sometimes I hear people online or f2f claim that they will ask their HP for something, sometimes something quite trivial. My understanding is that while one can request that God's will be done, that requesting "things" is not really kosher. Years ago, on another board I read a post where the auther said that if he had known that HP would do his bidding he would have sent him on a beer run back in his drinking days. I got a chuc

zoolie Cured of addiction?

I was thinking that after so many years of not using I might be cured. I have seen advertisments for programs that "teach" an alcoholic to drink responsibly and successfully and wonder if these programs work for the "true" alcoholic and if so, would they work for a heroin addict? Is there such a thing as being "cured" from this disease or does it go into remission, always keeping an eye out for the next available bad circumstance to weasle it's way back into one's life? Frank Mazzola prayers in meetings

No IMHO it is not---most meetings I have gone to in 34 years, does not always end with Lords prayer and also I believe that secretary should say "For those that care to join us in the ending prayer"---many are agnostic andor atheists and can leave room and others of a denomination do not seem to have a problem with the lords prayer Continue

Dan L Prayers in meetings....

Is it against tradition and the preamble to use a prayer with specific religious affiliation? When I look at the Christian prayer, "The Lords Prayer" that is said at the end of every meeting I have ever been to, I have to ask myself if we are going against the traditions and the preamble. What does everyone else think? Is reciting The Lords Prayer going against the traditions and the preamble as well as endorsing Christianity? Or should we simply accept it as is with its affiliations?
