NEW TO IT ALL

MY NAME IS MARTA AND IM AN ALCOHOLIC / ADDICT.

I AM NEW TO RECOVERY AND THE SITE. ID LIKE TO MAKE NEW AND MORE POSOTIVE FRIENDS. IM TRYING TO PULL STRENGTH FROM DIFFERENT PLACES, AND I BELIEVE THIS WILL BE A POSOTIVE WAY TO DO SO.

Hi there Marta. Welcome.

I am new to this site too. I have been around the program for 16 years. I have not had a perfect track record, but the stuff I have learned in the meetings, and numerous recovery centers has stayed with me, and undoubtedly saved my life. One of the biggest problems I have had, is depression. Once I get down, it really snowballs for me. When I get the impression that I am beat, or fighting a losing battle, I go into self destruct mode.
The remedy for me, has been gratitude. As messed up, as I have gotten, I know it always could have been worse. It is what I do have to be thankful for that keeps me going, and uplifts me. The fact that I have a roof over my head, and some food in my belly, is something a lot of us take for granted. There are many living on the street. That is basic, but I also can give thanks for the fact that I have "luxuries" , like access to the internet, and a change of clothes. Look around you. You have much more than many. The fact that you are reading this proves that.
The other method I have to "get the ball rolling" is by attempting to make things better yet. Again, simple things, like cleaning the house, doing laundry, dishes, helps me to grow my sense of accomplishment. With me, it works the same way when I'm going up, as when I'm going down. Once I get pointed in a direction, I can run with it. Actually getting out of the house, and walking to a meeting, or going for a coffee with "'POSITIVE" influences, is constructive for me.
The things I have had to change in order to maintain any sobriety, is just "everything". People , places , and things. I had to change my habits, the people I ran with, the way I think, and the places I frequented. A person usually knows where temptation is going to be. Those places can be avoided, or participation can be stopped. Reading program , self awareness, and self help literature can help occupy ones time too, in a positive manner. Once the seed is planted, a person has to nurture it, for it to grow. You can't just sign into an AA site, and expect changes. It requires effort, and ongoing maintenance. It may not always seem appealing at first, but the rewards are great, and it will become more and more inviting.
Stick with it. Work for it. There is lots of support around you. You just have to know where to look, and recognize it when it is there. Glad you're here. Hope to hear more from you. Take care.

I am farely new to AA the site and groups only been to an actual group setting three times but I have learned alot even in that short amount of time.Anyways, I hope that all is going well for you marta and everyone else thus far also remember Progress not perfection! <3
